Anyone ever take apart a turbo..???
 

In the process of swapping my CA '85 300SD to federal intake/exhaust manifold. The way it is I'll have to use the turbo from the donor car. I took a look inside the intake manifold and it is a mess!!! I used a parts cleaner and it is a little better. I am not sure about the turbo from the parts car. It looks like if I remove part of the housing from the donor turbo I can put it on mine to make it work. Anyone ever done this? I can provide pics if you want to see it.

Turbo parts are pretty much matched to each other. I wouldn't try mixing unless I was sure they were made to go together. You may be able to call Majestic Turbo in Texas and ask them if you can marry the pieces together.
As to cleaning your intake manifold. Since you have it off the car, how about using your shotgun cleaning kit with the big brass brush? Gonna be a messy job.

The impeller housings come off. The exhaust one may be uncooperative though. The impellers will be exposed, be very nice to them. Don't get into the center piece, called a cartridge, its "special."

I have taken several turbos apart and swapped housings, axles, compressor wheels and turbine rotors among them. No problem.

A turbo is a fairly simple piece of hardware to work on. But it is always recommended to get a pro-shop to balance the rotating parts. -Those things spin REALLY fast and the sligest imbalance will shorten the turbo's life drastically. Plus you really don't want pieces of a wrecked turbo sucked into your engine. :eek:

If you insist on doing everything yourself, at least throw in a fresh set of bearings.
