ABS and SRS lights up: stuck in traffic

Benz 92 e320

normally the idling further dips when the engine is running hot and long enough (esp when the engine temp is 90 to 100C esp on warm days).

but the other night , i was stuck in non moving traffic for > 1 hours (which is abnormally long)
with A/C, headlights and radio and noticed that the ABS and SRS lights up but turns off when i cut off the headlights. the RPM is not enough to handle the load. i have new alternator 80 watts and new battery. the engine is working at optimum.

my tach is busted so i have no idea of the actual RPM

this is not a problem in stop and go traffic because of the
reserve charge of the battery

today i have i adjusted my idle by 2 rotations but i do know thst this is still not adequate.

i do think that in this situations (non moving trafffic) the alternator will have some difficulty of maintaining an adequate charge at full electrical load unless you make some modifications
on alternator and idling

thanks

It would help to know the mileage on your 1992 E320. When was the voltage regulator replaced last, or is it the original? Your car should be able to idle for hours without any problems if all systems are functioning properly.

my alternator and regulator is 6 months old

i think it has something to do with the level of idle and only happens in long standing traffic. i also have a modified headlight
with 100 amps + foglamps

SRS & ABS Lights

Did you ever figure out the problem? I'm having a similar problem with my 1993 300D. SRS & ABS lights coming on. Battery is being drained. Turning off the lights makes a difference. I just replaced the battery. I'm not sure about the alternator.

Check voltage regulator and OVP

Are you sure your MB is a 1992 model? According to this sites BuyParts, the E320 didn't show up 'til 1994.

You say the alt. is relatively new, but I would still be suspicious of the voltage regulator. I experienced a near identical situation in mine some years ago. The brushes in the volt. reg. were worn down.

If yours are OK, suspect the OVP as Arthur Dalton pointed out earlier.

Mike.
That post is from 2004..the guy just added a posting to an Archieves SEARCH post ,[wish they would not do that]
.but , then again, sometimes it gives more info.
We just have to watch the dates.
