'86 560SEL head light switch...

Hello all,

Is the head light switch on an '86 560SEL supposed to be lighted ? I know on a '90 it is. If this is the case for an '86 also, then maybe I have a blown bulb. Any tips on removal to check ?

Thanks,
Frank.

I don't believe that it is supposed to be lit. My 1987 560SEL isn't..

I think my '88 300SEL is lighted... If I am not mistaken, the orange dot is supposed to be lit as well, but I think my bulb is burned. Will find out later and post.

Thanks all that have replied...

I browsed the CD manual last night, it indicates that for post 8/85 126 models, there's a small bulb behind that orange plastic dot at least; but I couldn't find the instructions as how to remove the knob to investigate. Don't really know if there are other bulbs for the switch plate though.

Frank.

The markings on the black trim surrounding the headlight switch should light up. Remove the knob by pulling it straight off, and remove the thin nut behind it. You should be able to remove the black trim piece and see the bulb.

All,

Yes, I've found & replaced the bulb on the switch plate. Thanks all! However, there's no bulb behind the orange dot though - whereas the manual indicate that there's supposed to be a bulb, both pre AND post 08/85. Again, I'm sure if this bulb is the same as the one for the switch plate

Frank.

The bulb behind the orange dot will light up when the rear foglight is switched on. US-spec W126's didn't have this feature, so there is no bulb.

On my Euro 1987 300SE, The markings on the black trim surrounding the headlight switch do light up. However the orange dot and the translucent arrow do not. there is a bulb there - I replaced it myself , so I know it is good. I pulled it out again and checked it elsewhere just to be sure - still good.
So perhaps the switch itself is going south, or a ground problem is causing this.
