OdometerE430

The odometer ilumination on my 1999 E430 is dimming and is hard to see during the day. The ilumination on the clock and the thermometer is fine. Is this repairable or do I have to replace the panel?

There are 3 little clear lense bulbs (get them from the dealer for about $4 a piece) just behind the multi-information display. You will have to pull the instrument cluster out with a special tool set of two hooks (also from the dealer). The cluster is held in-place by friction only. You can get to the back of the cluster by first lowering the steering wheel out of the way. The bulbs and its holders (in light tan color) can be removed by twisting. The whole job would take no more than 15 minutes. From your description, the center bulb is burn out but I would change all three while you are there.

While you have the cluster out, change ALL the bulbs. My dealer sold them as a"kit" that included the entire gauge cluster bulb set. On the W210 it's a pretty simple job thanks to the adjustable steering wheel. Get the tools from the dealer, as they're cheap and work really well.
