Buying my first diesel W124
Hello y'all,
I'm looking to buy a 300 diesel W124 auto estate with the 603.912 non turbo engine. Are there any issues with this engine/driveline set up that I should beware of? Also, are there any known problems with the last of the 124s (this is a '94 car)? My experience is so far confined to an early 230 petrol W124 auto estate, so am hoping that better fuel consumption will compensate for extra insurance costs. Cheers, Krolroger |
Rather short of power compared to the gas engine (since you won't have a turbo), but otherwise the only thing to watch out for is cracked head due to overheating. Won't usually fail unless overheated by that date of manufacture.
They also tend to blow head gaskets at about 200,000km or so, common problem on cast iron block/aluminum head engines, and I'd not let it keep you from aquiring the car. Body is the last truly solid Benz built, no major problems. Peter |
Thanks Peter.

There's also a diesel forum here with alot of history.

Yup, just found it. Thanks for the pointer.

As I understand, early W124s diesels (except the 250 D) were quite problematic, until past facelift cycle were most problems were cured.
A non-turbo diesel should be easier and cheaper to mantain. |
