Power loss

I have some problems with my 190. The past few months I have experienced power loss during acceleration or loading. For example, when driving up a particular hill, I now have to shift to the 1st gear. Before the trouble started I could make that ascent on the 3rd gear.
There is a correlation between the acceleration hesitation and the reading of the "economy" meter on the dashboard. When the meter is on the red, there is power loss.
When running on idle, the engine turning is a little unstable.

I've checked the ignition system, and the cables, spark plugs and distributor are in good shape. The vacuum tubes seem to be ok too. They are a little worn, but nothing serious. The electrical connectors on the carburettor and ignition system also seem fine.

The problems first occured after some days of not starting, during cold and damp Swedish winter weather. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but anyway...

What might be the problen?
I suspect that it might has something to do with the fuel system, for example the fuel filter. I don't know when it was last changed, but it's at least two years (30 000 km) old. Does a jammed filter really make that big difference in performance?
Can there be some dirt somewhere inside the carburettor (mouthpieces)? In case there is, can I detect (and clean) it in some way?

Hope someone out there can help me!
