Okay I had to say somthing I believe these did exist. However, they are an after-market remanufacture. They were made predominately for the Middle eastern market. The engine was the old standard 560 or 500 depending on year. The only change was the stretch of 14 inches I believe and the features, really just a baby limo. Not sure what company did the work either.

My info is that MB dealers in the Middle East rebadged fully loaded and then some 500SELs as 1000SELs. Many aren't stretched.

As for the one with a really wide b-pillar, it's either a Binz (www.binz.com) job or a local job. Binz has been modifying MBs for a long time. Ever see a 110 wagon or 114 ambulance? Mostly Binz work.

My take is that it's not a Binz job because Binz cars usually have windows all the way across, not blanked out sections.

Years ago, on Miami Vice, I remember seeing a huge stretch Benz with a mock AMG package with an emblem saying 10000 SEL (yes 10K) but that was obviously a fake emblem on a custom job. The 88 model looks legit, but the 1000 designation is obviously just an arbitrary number not meant to reflect the engine size. We all know how easy it is to change those emblems, which was obviously what the LA "mobguy" did. The IRS must have repossessed the decent set of rims he had on the car.

1000SELs were indeed legitimate cars. They were contracted out from Sindelfingen to another coachbuilder in West Germany. The engines are standard 560 as are the trannies. As previously mentioned on this thread, they were mainly for the Middle Eastern market but a few did find their way over here. Very cool cars and yet still not as ostentatious as a Rolls Royce!

The fact that it has a US VIN suggests to me that it was converted (hacked?) in the US and therefore is worth less than a comparable as-delivered 560SEL.

If the conversion can be traced to Binz or some renowned(sp?) coachworks, then you might have something. Otherwise it might as well serve the rest of its days as an airport limo.

And Aaron says...

Here are two spec sheets for the very tasteful 1000SEL:

Holy crap!

Looks like they fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. I thought I saw a thread on here about some 1000sel models that were set up as armored cars-not bad looking.

In spite of the scepticism and cynicism of many previous posts in this thread,

the standard reference books on Mercedes models since WWII list these longer wheelbase variations as regular factory offerings.

Nessie Sighting -1000 SEL.

I thought I had seen the boogey man and didnt want to mention it to anyone for the fear that they would laugh at me. Thank God for this forum But I saw a 1000 SEL once... it was in Beijing China...and it was beautiful.... dark blue, excellents lines, kinda like a stretch limo but not... (not like the hideous picture here on this thread)...and there was some beautiful chinese 'princess' ( red party chairmans daughter maybe) in the back seat...
It was about 13 years ago but it was one hell of good looking car and thanks to this forum I just got a nice little flashback...

Its exists..... and its dam* fine!

Speaking of Caddy engines....1969 Coupe de Ville. I pulled the 472 cubic inch motor out, bored it out .060, put an Eldo crank in it, and got high compression heads with large compression chambers. Displacement came out to 515 cubic inches, 8.44 liters. This thing really moved when I was done with it. Never got it to the track to see how fast it was, but it lit 'em up shifting to second gear. My eyeballs pushed back nicely under full throttle.
