Unhappy 1983 380sl surges

I bought my 1983 380sl in Oct. 03. with 90K miles,It still had a Florida 01 plate on it.I filled it up with gas the first and started on a 300 mile trip home.A short way into my journey the car was surging on route 95, like it was my first day of driving a standard transmission car, for about 75 miles non stop. This is an automatic. It was definetly fuel related. When I stopped at a stop sign it stalled and started right up again and ran good.I then drove a ways and it did it again so I shut it off again for 2 minutes and it didn't miss a beat for another 200 milesand it did it again.Any Ideas would be helpful,Thanks
