not much power very far after 4,000 rpm

The car I am speaking of is a 1987 420SEL. When already underway, if it is floored, the rpms shoot up as it downshifts, but it seems as if the car is hardly accelerating? It feels as if there were a slight hesitation at high rpms. Has anyone else encountered this phenomenon? Feels as if it were maybe starved for fuel just at high rpms?
Thanks
David

The 420 developes it's peak HP around 5200 so from 3500 to redline should be when the engine really comes on. I would start with a new fuel filter if that dosn't help have a shop or dealer put it on their computer...........
