diy lifting of a 420 sel
I would like to completely lift my 420 onto jack stands in order to change exhaust. What is the best way to do this?

I, for one, would not use just jack stands.
Even with using (Heavy Duty) ramps, I would not do both ends at the same time. I'd rather suffer a little, and wriggle around on the ground, than take the chance of something heavier than me falling on me. Using just jack stands, is too dangerous for me. Maybe you can rent a lift somewhere? That would be safer, and save your back a little too. -Larry

Larry is one of the original posters here and has been very helpful to me on several occasions. I hope he doesn't mind my respectful disagreement.
I raise both ends of MB's all the time by backing the back onto ramps then raising the front with a floor jack under the crossmember that runs just behind the oil pan. I then carefully place quality jack stands under the unibody frame rails just behind where they turn up. I leave the floor jack under the crossmember for safety sake and go about my business. That said, don't EVER jeopardize safety for expediency. Use quality, not homemade, ramps, jack and jack stands and always be careful. I am not recommending that you do what I do, but I am just telling you what has worked, so far, for me. For all I know, I've just been lucky and/or somebody up there has been watching out for me. Be safe, |

i do agree with Mr. Bible. his description of using 2 independent type stands [stand and floor jack] with rear ramps is how i've done my under car work. this is a kind of a back up system. hopefully not 2 systems would fail at the same time.
i'm installing sport springs right now. for the front i have used the jacking point ball for my floor jack (1988 126) and i also have a jack stand under the frame. and i'm only doing 1 wheel at a time. just as a side note: lift the right front corner up in the air to do the spring the right rear tire is off the ground. that is one strong unibody construction. i'm impressed! if you're still unsure you could try and use 2 ramp sets. setup the rear and then jack up the front. i've got a long cast iron floor jack here and i also have a smaller unit i use to jack each wheel up. if your main floor jack will get the car high enough you might get a second jack to lift the tire/control arm high enough to get that extra ramp set under the front wheels. then it couldn't go anywhere.

Thanks so much for the info - when the weather get better here in the Northeast I will attempt to change to complete exhaust. Is there anything I should look out for?
