My '83 300TD has started to make a grinding noise from the rear-left wheel at speed. My tech suggested repacking the bearings.

1)Is this a viable DIY project?

2)If not, is $170 for the front and $500 for the back a reasonable quote?

BTW, my '75 240D is still rolling well on the original bearings. Thank you for the continued support, Andrew Seidel.

If it's already grinding, repacking is not the answer. Replacement of the worn out bearings will solve your problem,,,providing,, it's the bearing that's "grinding". Be sure of the brakes, loose lugnuts, cv/universal joints..

I agree with Jeff - replacement is the way to go. But I would make sure that this is the real problem first.

The front bearings look to be a reasonable DIY, judging from the Haynes book. The rears are not even in it.

Looking at my Merecedes 123 chassis manual, R/R of the rear wheel bearings takes at least five special MB tools and appears quite complicated. Better to leave this one to a shop.

Chuck
