which synthetic oil for w126

ok xperts i've got a 87 420 sel and want to change over to synthetic oil, from what I gather i should go with mobil one, my benz has just under 190,000 miles on it, which grade should i use and i notice mobile has different ones, one for newer cars and a couple of other ones, which would be best? Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't consider anything less than Uncle Fudd's 0W5.

You only have to change it once every 10 years and once in place, the filter never needs changing in that 10 year cycle. They offer other weights and more info is available at:

Do a search or look at the manual, depending on what the temps are where you live I would think either 10w-40 or 15w-50 would do it. I would stay away from the 0w-40 stuff unless it's below freezing. Also no 5,10w-30 in old MB engines.

What is wrong with Mobil1 0W-40 in a MB??? vs XXw-40. I really don't think the bottom number is the real important one, unless you hop in your car when it's dead cold and floor it down the road.

Some people have had reports of excessive oil consumption with the 0w-40. It worked okay in my MB, but my VW TDI drank it very quickly (but the same motor did not drink 5w-40).

I think it is to light for the older engines. I only will use a weight that my manual says is ok.

Mobil1 0W40 is relativly new and your manual is old. I'm not saying that it should be used in you model of car, but you need to understand that the 0 number is the weight when the oil is cold, once your car starts warming up it is a 40W oil. Again the 40 is the important number. The O when cold allows for fast oil pumping upon start up. 0w40 will protect your car as well as 10W40.. I believe this is in the newer cars and listed as a viable synthetic oil weight for a 91 300E by Mobil1. Meets MB standards.

Yes 0 is the weight when its cold but 0 is very thin and I do not feel it lubricates to well because it is so thin. I'd rather start on a 5 or 10 weight, because I think they protect better, the oil pressure comes up real fast either way. When MB designed the M117, and 116 engines 0w oils were not around. Just my 2 cents but as cars get older and oil pumps wear they may not take to a lighter oil well.
