Dealer Oil Changes

How much should a dealer charge for a oil change on a 1986 560SL ? My bosses wife took her's into the local MB dealership and was told the oil change cost $600. She had them fix everthing in addition to the oil change....... Seems quite a bit much to me

Like? If they rebuilt the tranny in that $600 it was a deal! How much was the oil change?

What did they fix?

If the dealer charged her $600 for just an oil channge, then yes, that's a bit excessive.

If they found items that needed fixing, and did the work, then perhaps she didn't get bamboozled. What did the dealer fix? What condition (mechanically) is the car in?

I didn't realize how confusing that sounds.......The oil change alone cost $600. I am wondering however if she may have misunderstood the service manager. Maybe $600 was for the 60,000 mile service.... The total bill was in the 1,000's.

The car is in great condition. She just purchase it from Daniel Schmit & co. for $21,000... 54,xxx miles. Has apparently been a garage queen. I helped her remove the hardtop on friday, It appeares it has been off only a few times before. The softtop was covered in dust. The car does have a few minor issues mainly due to sitting.

$600 isn't just a bit excessive, more like a complete rip off. They must have done some other work for that money, probably the 60k service.
I think my local dealership charges $80 just to change the oil.

Make sure she goes over the paperwork with the breakdown of everything and check she hasn't been had.

Around $50 seems to be the going rate in my area. That would include, oil, filter, labor, and usually a quick inspection of the engine compartment.

drbrandini 04-28-2004 10:14 AM

I'm with you guys on this one. I've never had the dealer do anything on any of my Benzes so I am uncertain as to the going rate for the services. The $600 through a flag up to me, however she didn't even bat an eye. This car is just a toy for her. I don't think she would like the idea of being ripped off though. Whenever she comes in today I'll see if I can get the paper work from her. I am thinking they had to have done a 60K mile service for that price, then again the local MB dealer has been known to rip people off......

She's got something mixed up. Ask to see the bill.

In my neck-o-the-woods, most dealers charge about $100 for a basic oil change, more for synthetic. $50-80 labour, $10-15 filter, and then $3-10 per litre for oil.

On the C230, a Mobil 1 change is $50+$65+15 = $130 plus taxes and fees. They tack on another $45 to change the cabin dust filter and $30 for the filter itself. An "A" service can hit $300 without much problem.

Anyone still wonder why I do most of it myself?

Are those prices Canadian or US ?

$600. for an oil change is about 10 times too much.
There must have been other work done.
When I bought my Benz (in 1991), the dealer had a special promotion giving away free oil changes (oil, filter, quick inspection) as long as I own the car.
What a deal I had.
A quick calculation:
380K on the clock, oil change at each 5K: = 76 free oil change @ $60.00ea:= $4,560.00......in my pocket.
Where's that money gone?

Did you buy it new??? That was a nice incentive !

Kestas 04-28-2004 02:19 PM

$600... sheesh!!!! That kind of money should be plenty of incentive to learn how to do it youself, crawl under the car, and not mind the dirty fingernails.

My oil changes on the E320 cost only $13 a pop! I do it myself with dino oil. I believe my engine is none the worse for it than the more expensive oil changes.

drbrandini 04-28-2004 02:27 PM

You must have some good deals on oil filters up there....My oil changes cost a whopping $16.
