tie rods & front subframe mounts on '87 560sl

Hi,

Decided to replace my mounts this weekend and as part of the job replaced my tie rods as well.

Old mounts came out easy and new ones are already in.

Only have two questions.

1) CD manual mentions that tie rods should be installed with either right hand or left hand thread facing either outboard or inboard, but it's not clear. Does anyone know what is proper orientation and why?

2) Is torque for subframe mount bolts 35 N-m or 45 N-m and do you bottom out bolt all the way (ie. screw until threaded all the way through the mount) and then use torque wrench?

Thanks

The manual states" Mount track rods in such a manner that the track rod head with lefthand threads is always at the left (seen in driving direction). Can someone interpret for me?

Does it mean this?

______________________Front of vehicle________________

______Driver side arm____________Passenger side arm_____

LH thread-------------RH Thread____LH thread------------RH thread

for the two tie rods.

PS. "---------------" represents the tierod.

Hi,

Can't anyone answer this simple question? I'm just one step away from getting this car back on the road. I just need to know which way the left hand threaded tie rod ends point?

TIA,

Steve

If it was my car (and I have an "88 SL), I would go with your drawing. Left hand threads to left (drivers) side of car. Just sorta easy to remember that way. Big deal really is to have one left and one right on each tie rod. Gotta be able to adjust the length of course.
I don't have an answer for your second question as I don't know the spec.

Bobk,

Do you know if it makes a difference or not? I would think that the manual wouldn't tell you to install it this way unless it was important. Just don't understand why they want it this way?

My gut tells me that there should be symmetry. For example, LH threads on both sides on outside and RH threads on inside or vice versa. The manuals description was a surprise to me so I thought I was reading it incorrectly.

My guess would be to set it up so that when you turned rod one way, it always got shorter and other way always got longer. IE; wrench over top toward rear makes rod shorter-that would be left hand threads on left side.
