450SL Parking Brake disaster
I have a 1978 Mercedes 450 SL (model 107 chassis) and the Right rear parking brake assembly disintegrated inside the PBrake hub. It destroyed the backing plate and *everything* inside the hub. I will need to replace the backing plate, and all the components pertaining to the Parking brake. incl. the adjuster, bolts, Pbrake cable, Everything... First, however I need to disasemble it. I have the Rotor off but cannot figure out how to remove the backing plate. Will I have to remove the axle, and if so, then I would appreciate it if someone can give me a procedure to disasemble it and reinstall everything... Your help is greatly appreciated... ps.. I have a mercedes service CD Rom, but the procedures are hard to see and understand...
Thanks, Paul |

I have not personally done this, but I have looked into it for my 280C, which is the same design.
You need to remove the bolt in the center of the axle, and use a "pusher" tool of some kind to force the axle to compress and clear the backing plate on the inside, being careful to not let it drop. That should give you the clearance that you need. But I think the backing plate may also hold the bearing. Its replacement and adjustment are quite involved and you might want to look for a complete used unit.

Thanks.. I'll take a closer look at it... Its raining out right now, so when it dries up, I'll get back to you. Thanks. If anyone else has any information or service procedures, I would appreciate it...
