Looking for a replacement compressor for an 85 300SD. My local NAPA dealer has one for 136.49. B-U-T Says it's for a 300TD not sure if it will fit a 300SD. Any feedback from the A/C crowd out there? Thanks guys. Leon H.

Actually the newest versions of the R4 compressors are different than the original ones. They use different seals at the fitting assy and have a different clutch. Matching the numbers won't work AND if you buy it at NAPA it probably won't have the Delco Harrison (now Delphi) numbers anyway. For that price you are buying rebuilt. I would go to your nearest A/C Delco Jobber and buy a Delco/Delphi# 15-20206. This is a brand new unit (current version) and should be available for $2-250. For that price it is silly to use a rebuilt.

Been there, done that. DON'T use a rebuilt, even if they give it to you. I had a bunch of problems and ultimately, my wife traded an otherwise BEAUTIFUL 300TD for a Ford Windstar, and then I was the pour jerk who had to keep that piece of junk on the road.
She now has a FourRunner which has had ZERO problems in almost 70,000 miles. Of course, now she's eyeing an M Class. I will resist her trading until she's used up the four runner. It appears to be a long lived type vehicle. Larry |
