W124 Brake Squeak??

Hi,

I had developed a terrible squeak from my right front. I could definitely modulate the sound with the break pedal, almost able to play a song with it. The it began to happen in turns, both left and right, with no brake on. Then all the time. Then it went away. All quiet on the right wheel. Brakes feel OK, pad wear sensor lights are not on.

Should I be concerned?

this is in my '86 300E, 176k

Take the wheel off and check it out. Take the pads out, relube all the parts and reinstall. It's not really that bad. Here's some help:

Sorry, I also meant to ask, can a bearing make noise and then stop? Only reason I am going there is that for awhile it made noise with stering input turned as well as under braking.

By the way, this was the pads. The noise went away after a few days, and I figured musta been some grit in there or something. I just drove it until the pad wear sensor light came on. Well, I found out when I got to the telltale backing plate on rotor feel that the sensors were never installed! The rotors were crap anyway, so no loss there. All good now.

The brake noise is caused by the vibration of the pads against the rotor.

Check that all brake shims and hardware are installed, and in good shape.

If the pads are thin they will not have the ability to dissipate the heat, therefore causing the vibration.

The best way to get ride of the noise is replace hardware and pads (coat back of pads with a rubber coating) and make sure the rotors are true and meet specs.
