High Gear Upshift Problem
I did something I wish I hadn't done. Last night I turned around in a rest area and when back on the road matted the accelerator, and when it went to shift into 2nd gear it acked like it was bouncing from low to 2nd two or three times before I let off. When I let off, it imeidiately went into 2nd and then to 3rd but would not shift into high. I then kicked the throttle making it downshift and let right back off and it will go into high. If I manually pull the shifter into 3rd you can feel it shift down and then push it back into drive it goes right back into high. However when you then come to a stop and have to start again from a stop the trans will not grab high again until you kick it down again. I also think it stays in each gear a little longer before it upshifts than it used to. Ever wish you hadn't done something? It kind of reminds me of a stuck kickdown linkage or governor on Chrysler products I'm used to. Help Please!!!
P.S. This is on my 1986 560SL

Sounds like your kickdown switch is stuck from when you floored it.

If it was stuck would it still kick down now? Because it seems that is how I get it to go into high now is to kick it down and then let right off.

My bad - I meant the switch/solenoid in the transmission.
Still, it wouldn't hurt to disconnect the floor switch and see if that changes anything.

Does the 560sl have a throttle cable (bowden cable) as I've seen in other posts? If so it sounds like that could be a possibility. I'm a Warraty manager at a Chrys dealership so one of our techs and I are going to take a quick peek at it during their lunch break.

It has a 722.3xx transmission, which has a throttle cable, but that is separate from the kickdown circuit.

I just checked it and it does have a cable, it seemed fine although barely any free play so I adjusted it to have a slight amount of play. Just test drove it and on first take off still no high gear, then actually let it accelerat to 65 mph and it got high, then kicked it down and held for a few seconds. Then stoped and took off again letting it shift with very smooth, light acceleration and it shifted fine right up into high, stopped again and it worked fine again. Makes me think something was stuck somewhere. Hopefully my trip home tonight will operate correctly also.
Thanks for the reply!!

Tranny Info...
Hi
I have a 92 500sel, and I have had some similar problems with my transmission (also a 722 series). Mine always starts in first, and usually skips second and goes direct to third, and will sometimes have difficulty shifting from 3rd to 4th. Reading the tech manual, it appears that this is a problem with the B1 piston, and might need a new K1 spring. However, most all Mercedes shops that I have talked to have refused to "fix" these trannys, but rather want to rebuild the entire unit (at a cost in excess of $3000....) (The piston costs about $100, and the gasket set for the required service is about $30, so the "fix" is definitely MUCH cheaper, although no one can predict if it will work or not...) I am now trying to determine if there is a possibility of replacing the B1 piston with the tranny still in the car, although I haven't found much info on this yet... -David 92 500sel 86 560sel 85 535i 82 QPorte |

I have the same problem, only worse in my 380SL. There is indeed a B1 kit to address this, which costs about $65 from Fastlane or Rusty.
I am told that t is possible to install the kit with the trans in the car. The B1 stuff is on the passenger side. You place a socket on the cover, and lever it in with a pry bar against the tunnel, and remove the snap ring. Pull out the cover, piston, o-ring, and the gearshift shim. Install new parts and the cover and snap ring. I am not making this up. In addition to this, I am having my 380SL's valve body rebuilt by German Star. I am going to install the B1 stuff when I put the valve body in.

On my return trip home from work on Friday the tranny shifted fine again. It appears something definately stuck. Being that the shift points also increased I'm guessing it was something with the cable. I will pray the problem won't come back.
