moaning HVAc fan noise

yesterday my fan started making a moaning noise while it was running. it was set to auto. at first i thought it was the drivetrain but quickly realised it was the fan as the noise abated when i turned it off.

the fan does not make that noise when its set to "high." it will make the noise when that fan is going slowly. and when i turn the car off it will make the noise too as the fan decelerates to a stop.

bearings in the fan? possesed fan? do i need to sacrifice a yugo to the automoticve gods? thnaks for your help guys.

i did do a search for moaning noise, and fan noise and couldnt get good stuff from prior posts.

It's a longshot, but I had a similar noise coming from what I thought was the fan.

I usually close the far right vent when there isn't a passenger in the car. Once I opened the vent, the noise went away. The noise was simply the sound of air trying to get through the vent slits.

Hope that helps.

what model is your car?

on my 202, I had the same symptoms, once I pulled the old blower I found a small dried up leaf was the culprit, I was surprised that this leaf could sound so much like a bearing.

on my 202, blower is simple to remove.

From my experience, when you have a vent closed, the airnoise increases with blowerspeed. ;)

HEY!! I'll bet that's what I've got. It sounds like each fan blade is hitting something very light, giving off the smallest of tapping sounds. I'll check it out.
