A newbie question about engine coolant...

Hey everyone. My mom's Land Rover is a little low on engine coolant. Can I just fill it with water or should I add antifreeze to top it off? The car is in Texas so its not going to freeze over anytime soon...

You should run a 50/50 mixture.

You can actually buy a bottle a coolant that is already mixed 50/50 with water at your local parts supply store.

Otherwise, I believe it is always better to run a higher percentage of water to coolant, i.e. add water not coolant.

Oh....also as a point of fact, anit-freeze is also called coolant. It has two functions (in addition to inhibiting rust):

1. It acts as an "anti-freeze" by lowering the freezing point.

2. It acts as a "coolant" by raising the boiling point.
