Fan clutch - M104 on M119 anyone done it?

Since my fan clutch self destructed and ate the radiator I looked at lots of posts on electric fans and clutches. One of the items mentioned is that the viscous clutch from a M104 would fit on a M119 engine, but, you would need the M104 fan since it is 3 bolt vs M119 4 bolt.

Has anyone done this? M104 clutch is about $150 + $50 for a fan blade is still about $300 less than the M119 clutch. I assume the M104 fan doesnt pull as much air through the radiator. But I'm not sure that would be a big deal. The fan clutch shouldnt lock up very offen and with less air flow it will just be locked up for a bit longer.

So has anyone done this?

Just looked at a couple pictures to view the differences. From the pictures it is obvious the difference in size of the hydraulic clutch is significant. Why not adapt a KIA clutch?

I had to look at some pictures as I have never replaced a 119 fan clutch. I may have only replaced a handfull of 117 clutches if you forget about the early 4.5 clutches that did fail regularly. They don't fail. Find a used one!

Thanks for the info. If indeed you have never seen a M119 fan clutch fail Then I must have been the lucky one. I'll look for a used on or just get a new one. (the question came from past threads where it sounded like people were looking at this)

It appears that the bimetalic spring let loose and then wedged itself between the clutch body and the radiator. I'll see if I can get a digital picture of the bimetalic strip to post. It was tough to get it out.

Any tips on splitting the fan shroud? I know that your supposed to just unscrew the three bolts. Well I can get them to spin but their not comming out! I have to assume that there are inserts in the plastic that are turning.

Trying to avoid another $100 for a fan shroud.

Thanks
Paul

I had supposed your clutch came off and went through the radiator. If it came apart first that is a new one on me. I haven't seen that since the old 4.5 units.

I have a good used fan clutch and a good used radiator, both are from a 400E. If you are interested let me know.
