Are both switches dead?? Do you hear anything when you press either switch. If both are dead and/or you hear no activity, I would bet on the motor or related wiring. If it works from the rear switch only, replace front switch.

when i press either the front or rear switch, nothing happens,no noise, movement etc...then i would think it might be the motor,is this an expensive job and can i do it!
thanks

Either way, you are going to probably have to remove the rear door panel to get a better look. My 84 did that and I needed another window regulator.

I would check the switch first by swapping a working switch. You should also check that you are getting power to the switch. On my '86, the left front's motor is getting tired and I am expecting it to quit any day, but I wouldn't think the rear would just die.

Good luck.

eek, here's a quick way to see if any current is being drawn when you try to activate the motor. Get a digital voltmeter, connect it across the battery, turn the key to on position, either you or helper watch the meter, activate the front or rear switch. If the motor is stalled or jammed, you will see a voltage drop. If no voltage drop, then either switch(s) wiring or motor is dead. Windows are fused in opposite corners, ie, left front, right rear, right front, left rear. Make sure the window in front opposite the rear that is not working is functional. If not, replace fuse. If working, then you will have to dig into the door and motor..

Try to close the door with the switch on. That may release the motor/switch giving you a TEMPORARY fix. You can also try to clean the switch with contact cleaner.
Most likely you have to replace the whole assembly. I did the same in my car. A DIY job, once you figure out how to remove the door skin.
The other possibility is, one of the wires that provide power to the rear window is/are broken, at the door jam. Check if you get power to the switch.
Good luck!

I once took apart the driver's side console window switch on a 77 300D. They can be disassembled and cleaned. I used a pencil eraser and a paper towel sprayed with WD40. You could also use a Scotchbrite pad.

There are a lot of little parts (springs, pins, and the like), so I did mine at the kitchen table with lots of good light. The pushbutton to lock out the rear window switches can cause your problem, so I'd clean this one too.

It's amazing those switches work as long as they do, considering how much dust, lint, and miscellaneous spills get in there. You can just get new ones, but cleaning them just might be enough. If you take one apart, you can see why they cost about $60.

the fuse must be ok,because the drivers window works!
thanks

how do i know if its the motor or regulator?
are these expensive items and can they be fixed by a group of handy back yard mechanics with no mb experence!

They come together. They cost less han $150, depending where you get it. Not too hard to replace by a DIY.

How do I remove 300e rear door skin

Would like to change window regulator right rear door, 1990 300E
How do I remove the door skin or where can I learn to do this.

Don't forget to check the wiring itself. Mine had a broken wire where the harness connects near the hinge. Cheap fix for once!

From memory:

1) remove the lock/unlock stalk (it just unscrews)
2) unscrew the black cover around the door latch, and remove the black cover
3) carefully pry off the black plastic at the top of the door handle
4) push the foam aside, and unfasten the bolt at the top of the handle (10mm, I think)
5) remove the light assembly at the bottom of the door - remove the plastic light assembly, and disconnect the wires from it. Push the wires back inside the door, but set the bulb and plastic assembly aside.
6) The panel is held in with a set of 'J' hooks on the back that clip onto the door metalwork, with the top of the panel clipped onto the top of the door Pull the panel up firmly (but carefully, some of the 'J' hooks can be fragile and break easily) to remove it.

Re-installation is the opposite - be sure that all the 'J' hooks engage on the door panel when re-assembling.

But before disassembly, make sure that it is the regulator that's dead - check the contacts on the switch on the centre console and check the fuses before you start diving into the door panel.
