82.5K Service , 90K service...& .... brakes when
 

Ok, I am probably going to have to break this question down... I have my Maintainance Book in front of me.

My car is due for its Lubrication Service 82.5K miles, per p 77 of Maintainance Book it is Engine oil and filter change, but don't they lube other items that require lub (ie doors, etc)? I figured the book would detail more items.. maybe its just an oil change?

Brakes? I have receipts for front brakes at 59K miles 7/2001, but no receipt for rear brakes. I know the brakes are inspected at certain service intervals. Would it be likely that rear brake pads have lasted the 82K miles? I am going to look at the pads anyway in the next coming weeks. Fronts have about 12K miles on them, not sure how long mercedes pads last? front rotors were also changed at that time.

90K service -> this is one is just coming up in about 7K miles (aka about 4 mths from now).. it has a long list of items to be done, taking up about 2-3-4 pages in my manual :eek: . Haven't gone into it yet, but some of the items seemed kinda basic, not sure on all , as I haven't read it all. Is this one of those deals that a shop charges like $600 for, LOL? tranny oil, etc, I imagine..

I am just getting kinda lazy, and if I can pay for it , I might as well pay someone to do the service vs doing it myself, I guess... not enough time... <g>

Yes, it is possible that the rear break pads lasted that long. Mine lasted more than 90k miles and still had some life in them.

I beieve the only thing lubed at the 82.5k service is the engine hood. The book does not specify anything else to be done other than this and the oil change.

Yes, if you go into a dealer, you will probably run in the range of $600 for a 90k mile service. Parts will cost you not much more than $100 if you do it yourself. Depending on the vehicle, tranny fluid may not be done. Starting with the 722.6 tranny, it is considered a permanent fill and never changed as part of the recommended scheduled maintenance. Also not on the list is differential oil. I put redline gear oil in mine at 90k miles in addition to the list in the maintenance book.

Most of the items in the 15K and 30K maintenance recommendations are "check this, check that". There's no reason why a competent DIYer can't perform these tasks, then take any any necessary corrective action such as changing brake pads.

Don't forget the time dependent fluids - anti-freeze and brake fluid.

Assuming you don't find any big problems your parts cost for spark plugs, filters, and fluids shouldn't be more than 50-75 bucks. If you have to install pads at both ends add about another hundred.

The same thing at the dealer will set you back $700 to $900. Most of it is labor, but you don't need an ASE license or Mercedes-Benz tech schools to check brake pads and and most of the other inspection tasks.

I'm doing a 15K check on my 190 tomorrow and changing the clutch slave cylinder.

You are right, just basic stuff, check this check that. I read it while in rush hour this am on the way to the office. Will have to check on the tranny / rear end fluid on my w124. Don't remember if it is included in there or not.

I forgot part of my original question needs an answer :D . The 82K mile service? Just an oil change? That's what it seems from the svc book. No additional lubing?

I always bring these up because they don't appear on any of the scheduled services in your maintenance booklet. It is in the booklet, but is mentioned in a different location than the mileage interval services.

My car was serviced exclusively at the dealer for the first 127,500 miles, and the dealer service writer missed it.

Here are the requirements:


Change the brake fluid every two (2) years.

Change the Coolant every three (3) years.

I'm amazed that a dealer service department can be so brain dead that they don't tell the customer the brake fluid or coolant needs changing. Heck, it's right on the backside of the checklist they gave customers back in the late eighties. I just made copies of a blank one and use it to document and track my maintenance.

The 82.5K service is a 7500 mile "lubrication" service. For my car it's an oil/filter change and a check/lubrication of the throttle linkage.

Your owners/maintenance manual should tell you what is recommended for a 7500 mile service.

I agree with all the recs mentioned. I just replaced rotors, sensors, pads and brake fluid, which only costs me approx $200 and half a day (first timer).

I have the W124 CD and has the maintenance sheet in it. I would gladly fax copies for those who don't have the CD.

It recs brake fluid change every year, I used to think every 2 years, and coolant every 3 years for my '87.

Yes, as I stated above, 82.5k is just an oil and filter change and lube of the engine hood.
