380se just died on freeway......help!!!
I just bought a 84 380SE with a V8 in it. I got 35 miles from the owners place and it just died like someone shut the key off. I was doing 75 mph on the Interstate when it hapeened. I have checked spark and it is good. I pulled dist cap and rotor turns.
I have read about timimg chains, but by the welding this one has been replaced at some point. It turns over fine and fast, but just wont fire. Could it be a fuel problem? I dont even know if it is mechanical or electrical fuel pump. Is there a fuse or relay? I dont hear a fuel pump buzz when I turn it on....but is that because its mechanical...I dont know. Car has 190k miles.....what should I look for?? Thanx |

On the drivers side of the engine compartment, between the firewall, is the fuse box. Open it and check the fuel pump fuse. There is a guide on the inside of the top.
The car uses the old bullet fuses. Give each one a slight twist, in case of corrosion. You may need a new fuel filter. It could also be the fuel pump relay, FPR, which is mounted to the rear firewall beside the other relay with the fuse on top (OVP or over voltage protection relay). The FPR may need to be resoldered. The engine uses CIS injection with some electronics wrapped around it. The ECU is inside the front passenger kick panel. The other electronic device between the two firewalls is for the ABS system. Where are you located?

How fast does it turn over? If it turns over unusually fast then I would worry.
Don't really understand "by the welding" when it comes to verifying if the chain has been replaced or not. Not trying to be a total downer on you here but just because the dist rotor still spins, it does not mean that it hasn't jumped time. But, for my good news, I think you may just have a fuel or spark problem because most of them I have seen fail at a significant rate of speed, highway speed that is, usually crater big time.

There is a test for the fuel pump relay where you pull the relay from the socket and jumper pins 7 and 8. With the key on, you should hear the pump running and if the relay was the problem, the car should start and run. I have documented resoldering the relay as a repair for my failed unit. Just do a search of the forum.
