My Car Just Got Wacked This Morning

Sitting at a stoplight and bang. Low speed, but the drivers rear side was pushed in.

It was a late model Ford Explorer. The drivers brother-in-law has a body shop. They are both coming over tonight to look at the car.

I'd post a pic but my photo editor won't do the trick for this forum. but I have no luck either.

The problem with the damage to my car is that nobody paints with a single stage paint here. They all want to do a base clear paint which will not be the same as the rest of the car.

This is the original paint on a 20 year old car that you can see a clear refection of a bush in the picture. And they say that a base clear coat is more durable. Hog wash!

In your photo it looks like anthracite (I have it on my 81 SD) then it would be base clear ,but maybe it's just the light. You pretty much have to paint the whole panel with base clear. The last time I bought paint you could still get single stage paint in OR..........

From what I understand it is a single stage paint called Glaserite. Nobody paints single stage in Central Ca. Is there any MBZ specialist on Oregon ? Portland Grants pass?

The problem with just buying the paint it still has to be matched and you need all the ingredience to mix and match on site.

This car will not be clear coated unless they refinish the whole car. That's my final offer to the adjuster. (.) I'm just that easy.

I'm not sure if any body shops in OR will shoot single stage paint and I know they are cracking down on types of guns amount of overspray etc but bodyshop supply houses were selling it last year.I have a great old Binks model 18 lays down paint smooth and easy.Mercedes Of Eugene is a very good dealership a call to them might locate the shop you are looking for.Have you checked online for it?..........

Insurance nightmare

Her's the lastest.

I have had so many stories I don't know who to believe.

All body shops want to include blending of the hood to match the paint. Yet to blend it must be a base clear paint job. I don't have that type of paint job. Some body shops will tell you right up front it won't match. Another body shop says as long as your finish is that nice you will not notice the difference if some of the car is single stage and the other area is a base clear coat.
(BS!)

My insurance carrier says how can you tell if you have not let them try it? (Yeh I'm a Blonde!)

The insurance company appraiser gets wind of the single stage paint and will only but match the fender to the rest of the body as blending is not the norm for a single stage paint. The insurance appraiser will adjust the costs of paint and labor to the fender and door accordingly.

Keep in mind now that the insurance carriers will pay for X amount of area for x amount of dollars for base clear paint as that is the "industry standard". If your car is not "industry standard" they are not liable to cover any additional cost of the proper material i.e. the original Glaserite paint (According to the California Insurance Commissioner's office). You may have to sue the person to recover actual damages.

I may have missunderstood the person at the California Insurance Commissiner's office, but I don't think so.

Bottom line;

The body shop will put on what ever paint they think they can get away with, it will not match and they will not guarantee it.

The insurance carrier will say they have met their obligations and sign here (as if we are all Blonde).

Signed, Truely PISSED at the Ricer that smacked my car.

PS: Wbains, sorry for airing myself on your post. Who would have thought you would need an attorney for a minor fender bender.

I know how you must feel. It could have been worse.

Sounds as if the other driver was on a cell phone.
