Reverse gone in my 400E

My reverse is gone in my car. the only way it will go in reverse is if you rev it up and after about 10 seconds it will slam into gear. any input? What other trannies will work in this? Am I better off putting a used one in or repairing the reverse in this one?

Any info is greatly appreciated.

have a refurbished unit installed. My 400E is "clicking" in reverse and engaged slowly..very slowly. My tech has told me it's a matter of time before the reverse goes out. His recommendation is have a remanufactured tranny installed. The cost of that after the core charge is close to the R&R labor, parts and repair of the existing tranny and that only gets you the new clutch packs and a reseal....There are several reman shops that offer the trannies with a full 2 year warranty...good deal... talk to your tech.

You are best off if you can have it rebuilt in house. Like all rebuilt stuff there are likely to be issues afterward. If the guy only knows how to install units he will be screwed to deal with an issue with one.

The problem in both above cases is real common and should be dealt with immediately. The longer you wait the more trash gets pumped through the system. Had one the other day that quit shifting from the crude packed into the governor bore screen.

When you take it to destruction, figuring to exchange it, think about what you are getting back. The best rebuilts are ones that had very little wrong before rebuilding. Taken to failure the tranny becomes one you wouldn't want rebuilt. Someone gets it back under those exchange programs.

This is a common problem with the early 722.3,4,5, transmissions. MB had a problem with the clutch material. The reverse clutches flaked and loose their friction material, no reverse or a delay is the end result. When the wear is too much the piston rubs against the K1 drum, making a noise. Water contamination can also cause flaking; a strawberry looking coolant or transmission fluid is a sure sign of water contamination. Make sure any rebuild transmission you buy has the updated MB reverse frictions and steels.

How expensive would repairing the tranny run, on average?

Here in Western OR it runs about 16 hundred to 2k for rebuild on 722 .3s Sun Valley outside LA sells rebuilds for around 1350 with tourque converter........
