W124: if blinker and fender do not exactly match
If the upper part of the blinker does not exactly fit to the fender, will rust grow around that gap?
How can I fix it?

This is how it looks.
The black rubber around blinker does not fit to the fender. There are gaps between them. I had a mechanic put a new blinker hoping that new blinker has thicker rubber, but I still have gap.

It would only rust if it is exposed metal. If the metal is painted and covered, then it will not rust. I am pretty sure that is SHOULD be painted, but if it is scratched or beat up, the paint will be missing. What kind of condition is the edge in?
Thanks David

Up to where I can see from outside, the front edge of the front fender is covered by white paint.
Where moisture is captured, rust can form, even if there is paint. E.g., edge of doors, edge of trunk hood, etc. Some things penetrate paint, though very slowly.

Can moisture be captures there? If I were you I'd go on ebay and look at some pics of similar cars. I'll bet there are quite a few on there that will have close-up pics or close enough pics to tell you how big of a gap. I'll try and measure my dad's gap on his 300E.
David (edit): The mechanic did replace the gasket didn't he?

I just looked at a pic on fastlane and it appears the rubber is one piece with the lense. Sorry I couldn't help more.
Thanks David

I'm suprised- I had to lubricate mine to get them on the car!
Mine are really tight! Is it an aftermarket fender? You could assume that it will settle in.... Other option would be to shim it with a sealer. You could grease the seal with silicone grease, then apply a some silicone to the fender. Actually, it would be better just to put the silicone between the seal and the turn signal. If you do something alone these lines, I would try and put it almost on, let it set for 5-15 minutes, then push it the rest of the way. After it has cured, remove the lense and carefully trim any excess silicone from the car. I'd just use a single edged razor blade being careful not to cut into the paint. Michael

I saw several W124's in my town before going to dealer. On those, the rubber and fender matched.
The service advisor saw another W124 on the MB shop's parking lot. They matched. I asked to replace gasket only, but blinker and gasket were a set. I hesitate about applying some material there because MB might have applied factory wax based rust proof and there might be incompatibility. But I am not sure, because the resolution of the pictures on MB service CD is poor. Anyway, I feel that they did poor job. The lower part rubber is extruded compared to the metal below the blinker. On other W124, the rubber is a littler recessed. Thank you WANT '71 280SEL and samiam4. The blinker was placed at body shop directly operated by the MB shop. It is surprizing that they did not match it. The shop has Advanced CL Certification. I heard this MB dealer has good reputation for good service. I asked another trim job at that shop, but I just cancelled it. Another thing: on their invoice, it reads perform state inspection total $29. Today, however, I found my car having old sticker. They said they will refund $29. I think I met poor service advisor.

Sounds like either the fender or the turn signal is not a MB original part. You should ask the repair shop to correct this at their expense.

I am thinking of going to them again.
But I may just waist the $55 labour cost. If I go to them, they will do it without additional labour cost. But they will keep my car 1~2 days. The time for going back and forth . . . not being able to use my car . . . .
