O.K.,

my 84 300SD with 240K on it slips or flairs when it shifts from 2to3. Other shifts are fine.

I was a little low on fluid and added some. that helped alot, but still slips some.

I have read and head about the B2 piston replacement. I'm not sure I'm a candidate but, I am concerned about one thing.

I have been told that an old tranny with a brown tinge to the fluid, that changing fluid was an invitation to disaster. The thinking being that the particles of clutch material in the fluid actually help the transmission clutches do their thing.

Any suggestions or advice?

Mr. Bill

I'm not a pro and I'm sure those who are will correct me if I'm wrong.

It's my understanding that one sign of a faulty B2 tranny piston is a car that will not engage forward gears, but still operates in reverse. The reverse gear works; the forward gears do not.

Not sure I follow the clutch material helping clutch to function with existing brown tranny fluid? I'd change the tranny fluid and filter a couple of times. It might clear things up. My 2 cents.

Regards.

yeah, could be particles floating around that
can clog filter and impair shifting.
get the filter and fluid serviced.
monitor.
look at archives for similar post.
good luck to ya.

The B2 piston has nothing to do with 2-3 shift. The 2-3 shift is controlled with the K1 clutch pack.

I second the last post. 2-3 shift would not be B2. B2 stays applied through 1,2,3, however K1 gets applied in 3rd gear. Also check your vacuum system and make sure vacuuum drops off during acceleration.
K1 probably burnt.
