I bought a 99 CLK from a private owner and discovered that the windshield is a aftermarket non MB glass. Would this cause the rain sensor of the auto rain sensing feature not to work and can anything be done besides rplacing the windshield?

Assume that they didn't touch anything besides changing the glass, it shouldn't affect the effectiveness of rain sensor at all....

There is a blue colored plate which attaches to the window which should be on the new one. This is critical to rain sensor operation. Also if it's poor quality glass with bubbles or impurities the sensor will not work properly.

leitztech is right about that. Make sure you check it right away. Rain Sensor uses infrare reflected from rain drops on the windshield. If the glass is not high quality, it's may in a way distort the infrare.

It looks like there is something with a dark blue color showing through a small circle and a square area. MB service advisor said they would not cover under warranty as not original glass.

I have also gone through the rain sensor issue on my clk. If the aftermarket glass and the rain sensor is not installed PERFECTLY then the senson will not operate properly or at all. For this reason, I would use only MB glass. I am not sure if the sensor assembly can be removed and re-installed properly. I think the shop told me it is one time deal. Ir they don't get it right you may be SOL.
