Thanks for the drawings, very useful. As my company design and manufacture Remote Visual Inspection (RVI) equipment, then maybe I'll borrow some kit and take a look inside my fuel tank. I'll take some pictures too if anyone's interested? See if I 'see' the offending pin!

A Bore Scope is how I was able to pinpoint this very unusual as well as uncommon problem. The Bore scope was inserted into the tank(s) through the sending unit receptacle, watching the monitor I could see the bowl drain.

Nothing like tools to help put a on your face!

I have the same growling in my 89 190 2.6 and the sound is coming from the fuel pump area. Car will crank and run fine for approx. 5 seconds and then the engine shuts down. It will immediately crank again and run for 5 seconds then it shuts down again, over and over and over. It doesn't just run out of gas and cut off, it shuts down immediately. This just happened yesterday, hopefully I will find out more by the weekend when I can get to it. Had to trailer it home. Any suggestions would be appreciated before I get started. Thanks

Sounds like most likely the fuel pump(s). But could also be the fuel pump relay. To be sure, jumper the FPR and see if the car keeps running.

Wow, old post.

Give the fuel pump a solid whack with a wrench or something, and see if it starts.

Usually will get a failing pump going for a while. Often this will get you home.

Also, if you jump the relay, the pump will stay on, and you can feel it with your hand to see if it is operating.

Obviously a growling fuel pump is on its way out.

Out of gas

Since the first three cars listed in your Signature have been sold I assume you're referring to a 91 300 E.
The factory technical data manual states the total capacity of the fuel tank is 70 ltrs (about 18.25 gallons ) At that point most of the fuel pick-up screen in the tank is seeing air!
Remove the screen anc clean or replace it, If the screen is dirty the pump will pull air easier that fuel.
