ABS breaks 98 Winstar
I'm on my third new master cylinder and it will stop the Van but the peddle goes to the floor slowly after I stop. I bench blead the master cylinder and blead the wheel cylinders per the manuel for this Van. I even went on a gravel road and actavated the ABS about ten times. Then I came back and went through the blead proceedure again still no change, peddle still goes to the floor slowly. My ABS light on the dash is showing the system is okay. Does anyone have a idea what the problem could be. Thanks

Did you thorougly bleed the brakes?
|
Sorry for the dumb previous reply, but we did the same job on a 91 Toyota Previa and the brake pedal would be soft and the brakes would not retract! In our case it was the crappy aftermarket master cylinder. We went to the dealership, paid 80 bucks more and after a good brake bleeding starting at the rear right wheel the things brakes nice now. So where did u buy your master cylinder?

The first two were Fenco from AutoZone and the third was from Advance Auto Parts and was a Delco. The third one I blocked the two ports and I had a hard peddle. I just have a hard time believing I could get three bad ones in a row.

Have you considered the slave cylinder?
I have replaced quite a few bad slave cylinders on my cars, but i've never had a bad master cyl. yet. Symptoms of a bad slave cyl. is just as you described. Freestyler |
I'm sorry to say I'm not familiar with the term slave cyl. I have heard of it before but could not explain to some one what it is.

"slave cylinder" is what the "master cylinder" actuates
but when we're dealing with brakes rather than clutches it's more common to call them "wheel cylinders" -- and more PC, too. On disk brakes, of course, what we're really dealing with are "calipers."

Thanks for the info.

Thanks to all that tried to help. I took it to a brake shop and found out it is my HC unit or ABS unit. $1,200 installed.
Thanks again. |
