Hey there,

I have an '86 190E 2.3-16V (US spec). WHen I sit at idle the temp. raises up and wants to keep going, the fan won't kick in like it's supposed to at 100 celcius. When the traffic clears up and the car starts moving the car cools down though. So that tells me that my cooling system is good. It's just that dang fan. I'm told that it is more than likely my fan clutch and/or the sensor for the fan. I'm also considering a fan actuator switch of some sort. Please MB gurus, enlighten me. I already ordered a Mosselman turbo kit for my car and I don't need the thought of overheating engine to keep worrying me. Thanks again MB gurus. Later.

Regards,

Clinton Davis

Is the electric fan in front of the radiator supposed to turn on at 105 C or when the a/c is on? I have heard both, and only found reference to the 105C turning it on when searching the old posts. I am curious, as I would think it is the same on my 560SEL.

First off - I'm not a pro.
Your 190E I believe has what's referred to as an M103 engine in it. There are various sizes, but if yours is an in-line 6 cyl, Single Overhead Cam(SOHC), this is what you've got.
Many M103s have a fan relay that runs off of the A/C receiver drier, near the A/C low pressure switch. The fan is activated(I think) when the refrigerant pressure reaches a given point or the engine temp reaches 102F(in the case of my M103). I suppose your fan relay could be faulty; then again, it could be an number of things. Try searching the archives.

Mr. Pres:

I think your fan kicks in at 105C, not 100C.

Try sitting at the light a little longer.

EHhhhhhh! 190E 2.3 is an M102 engine, 4cyl, I have it on my W124. It has an electromagnectic fan not a clutch. It kicks in at 105C give or take depending on year. If its cool enough outside and your radiator is old it will just hover in heavy traffic near the 100C mark and never trigger the fan...annoying as hell.
The fan switch is screwed into the top of the the engine behind the oil cap. If you are going to order a new one make sure you give your vin number so you get the right one. Hope this helps.

As stated the fan is designed to come on at HIGH temps. You can get a fan switch that allows fan to come on at 100C instead of 105C. Its a red 3 pole switch & MB# is 006-545-42-24.
