W210 Window Wind Noise

Anyone experiencing wind noise coming from the drivers side of their W210? My '98 E320 has had this small problem for the last 3-4 years. The dealer looked at it once but couldn't find the source of the noise.

The amount or pitch of the wind noise can be varied slightly by very slightly raising or lowering the window in its top or closed position.

Any suggestions on how to locate the source of the problem and cure? Thanks.

W210 Window Wind Noise

Hi;

I see that you haven't gotten any responses, so I thought I might mention, that I have been working on getting my passenger side front window to go up and was looking through the Merdedes CD on the 83 300SD...

And I recalled seeing a section that mentioned an adjustment on the windows up/down settings to prevent the wind noise...

Sorry but I didn't remember the exact place but I also thought about the garage that couldn't fix it...

I would suggest that you check out the CD...

I was looking under window assembly, etc...

Unfortunately, there are about 4 or 5 different places where the different information regarding the windows was located...

Hope this was a help...

Later,
Ray

Try Turning the Inside Blower Fan to High..roll the windows up and use a small dia hose held up to your ear and move the hose around the glass edge and door seal. on the OUTSIDE of the car. This WILL help you locate the leak.

Thanks you for the suggestions.

Rayh, I don't believe the maintentenace CD has been released for the '98 E320. When it's available, I'll be sure to read about adjusting the window.

Mark, that really is a novel approach to finding a window leak. Appreciate the info!

wind noise

Our 190e was noisy about the tops of the doors, because the top frames were sprung out a little bit. You could see by comparing the rubber weatherstripping on each side, and with the back doors, which were quiet.

We could make the doors quiet by winding the window up on a rag (for a handle) and pulling the top of the door in while driving. So the obvious solution was to gently bend in the top frame by putting a knee in the middle of the door and pulling on the top. Nothing broke. It came in just a little. It is quiet!

W210 Window Wind Noise

Hi Dave];

I found the place where it mentions the wind noise and it is the same on the 1991 300 series as it is on the 83...

It has a few minor photos on the installation pages of the door windows also, but wasn't sure as to how to include them with this post...

I think that the alignment would be about the same on a 98 vs a 91...

My CD only covered up to 91... But it would seem to me that the door/window alignment would more than likely be the creator of the wind noise...

The following info was listed under, "Doors, Removal and installation of front door", & "R and R Front Door" :

The last words on installation...

22 Adjust striker in such a manner that door paneling of driver's door is in alignment with door paneling of rear compartment door or projects by max. 1 mm.

23 Insert bolt on the door holder and lock.

24 Check door for easy operation.

Note: If required, correct position of striker eye be means of compensating shims...

25 Check distance between window frames top and roof frame and align, if required. To prevent wind noises, a distance of 21-23 mm must be assured...

End of file...

Hope it can be of help...

Cheers,
Ray

ajme and rayh,

Thanks for the additional information. First I have to determine the source of the noise, be it the door to body seal or the window to door frame seal.

I'm inclined to believe the cause is with the window to door frame because I can vary the amount of wind noise by very slightly adjusting the window position at its top most closed position. I wouldn't think moving the window in such slight amounts (1/8"?) would have any bearing on the door frame, but I suppose it could.

Thanks again.
