I am interrested in modifying the rear deck in my '89 300E, to place a free-air sub, and was wondering if anyone knows if this could invoke any future problems with anything else?

Looking at mine, from above and below, it looks like you could lose the first aid kit and free up some space there. Does not appear that there is anything substantial below that part of the rear shelf.

I did this on my old 87 300E. I mounted an 8" Pioneer free air sub after cutting a hole in the deck just under the first aid kit (which I removed). It worked great, no problems with the car.

Hey, Bob one question:
How is the base with a free air sub? Considering I listen to music with a lot of bass and usally at louder than normal levels. Thank You |
DO a search for "500E stereo upgrade" in car audio section...interesting stuff.
|
The bass has full and solid, but the 8" driver does occasionally sound like it's bottoming out. There might be room for two right next to each other, but I'm not sure.

I CUT MY REAR PANEL ON MY 190E. THEN I PLACE 2 PIONEER 12" AND 2 PIONEER 8" IN A MDF BOARD ALL FREE AIR DESIGN. THE BASS WAS NOT DEEP SO I END PUTTING THEM IN THE TRUNK IN A PORTED BOX. NOW THE BASS IS WAY LOUDER AND DEEPER. SO FROM MY EXPERIENCE I WILL SAY DONT LOSE YOUR TIME. AND PUT A GOOD BOX IN THE TRUNK WITH 2 12"SUBWOOFERS OR 2 15". AND YOU WILL GET 100% BETTER SOUND.
