C280 rev limits??????????????

hey guys

My little brother just got a 95 C280, it seems to have a rev limit in the park position? It cuts in @4000 rmp and will not rev over that ,when driving with the the rev limiter kicks in at 6500, does this sound right for a C-class
thanks

Yes, P or N position has rev limit around 4000 rpm.

why in the world would he want to rev an engine that high in nuteral or park . reving an engine to near red line with no load on it is asking for internal engine parts soup for lunch.........

Actually it doesn't have to do with park or neutral it has to do with vehicle speed. If you wish to test this drive 10mph and push the shifter to neutral and rev the motor.

On most modern cars with rev limiters you can floor the throttle in neutral and the engine will just lay against the rev limiter. There's no rhyme or reason to do this, and it won't hurt the engine, but it's a rather childish stunt.

I've never done it myself, but it was demonstrated to me about ten years ago by a (Toyota) factory rep with a company test car - a Lexus LS400.

On cars with a manual transmission it would be a disadvantage for a high speed double clutch downshift if the rev limiter engaged lower than the normal point.

DaveCT didn't you have a 300SD for sale at one point?

Rev limit at 4K in P/N is normal and is touque converter protection feature.
As SB states , the limit is dropped after 10 mph....
