Please Help - Car dead in driveway !

Electrical problems 1987 560 sel

Hi,

Any help will be appreciated. After leaving my lights on I jumped started my 1987 560sel with my 200 amp quick start charger (as opposed to using a trickle charge). In hindsight I assume this was a dumb thing to do because now my radio does not work, my passanger seat continously go slightly forward and then back and my car looses its charge overnight. I have removed the fuses for the radio and seats as well as a few others but it continues to loose its charge. I assume I have screwed up the electronics on the radio and seat controller but I cant seem to figure out why it keeps loosing its charge.

First - should I never jump start with quick start charger and only use trickle?

Second - shouldn't the overvoltage protection fuse/system have stopped this and blown the fuse? (the fuse does not look blown to me)? Should I change this part?

Finally - Any directions or suggestions about finding out why it is loosing its charge.

THANKS!!

Bad battery maybe? Can you take it somewhere to have it checked?

1 - Don't know. Sorry.
2 - If it was a case of too much voltage (and too much current as a result), then yes the fuses should have blown. It's possible they are blown, but look OK in a quick glance. Check 'em out closely and get newer ones if necessary.
3 - Could also be a bad alternator, or voltage regulator.

If you kill a several year old battery by leaving the lights on overnight, a cell might short and the battery won't hold a charge.

Disconnect the battery, trickle charge it overnight, then remove it and take it to an autoparts store for a load test. If bad, buy a new battery. I think your size is a Group 49, which should be relatively common.

I don't think a battery booster will hurt the electrical system as long as you didn't reverse polarity.

After the new battery is installed check system voltage to make sure the alternator is okay. It should be 13.5-14.5 volts with the engine idling with accessories off.

It sure sounds like reverse polarity to me!

MB puts all sorts of protection for overvoltage, but a reverse voltage could fry the radio and blow the diode in the alternator...as well as popping a few fuses.
