I finally traded my '84SD for the '90SE I mentioned in previous posts. Today, I was giving it a good detail cleaning.

I noticed that the air bag cover has a small at the top left corner where the perforation outline is. You can see the air bag through the separation.

Is this dangerous? Anyone have evperience with these? I seem to remember hearing that the air bag needs to be serviced around ten years.

Any suggestions would be appreciaterd.

2 cents woth...I would consider the possibility of bag contamination and deterioration (weakening) if open to ambient. (?)

Purely a cosmetic problem. The air bag generator is the part that time affects. They are rated for 15 years, so many 1986 & earlier cars need new bags now!

Just think, your bag will come out that much quicker. Heh heh heh.

I can't tell you in which issue. But it seems like I saw about two years ago, in the Star magazine, a note about Air bag renewal times. If I remember correctly, they extended the replacement time from 10 to 15 years. Don't consider my information definitive. But, maybe you can call 1-800 FOR MERCEDES, and ask them. Hopefully this will help your peace of mind. Hopefully we never have to find out in practical application whether or not they will work.

Good luck,
