Although BMW lists many cars on their website with manual transmission, I could not find one at a dealer.

I threw gasoline on the fire yesterday, and bought a 2001 C Class with a six speed. It will be in Monday or Tuesday. I could not be picky about options and color unless I waited three months minimum. Also it is not determined when you can buy a C Class with the Comand system. So I just bent over and let them keep their 20% extra profit from recent and rapid DMark evaluation. I threw gasoline on the fire, and I'm sure they're laying around trying to catch their breath after laughing so hard at the bald headed sucker in Texas that bought one of the things knowing full well that they were ripping him off for the 20% deevaluation of the DMark and kept every single Pfenning for themselves. What can I say, I love the car. I'm definitely the fool rushing in.

Have a great day,

To TED 2222: On almost all MBs the standard transmission is automatic. The other few have a manual or stick shift transmission.
Let's get our terminology correct so we all know what we are talking about.

Yes there are many who still use the word standard when referring to any manual transmission. This is from the days when the transmission that came standard was a manual, and the optional was an automatic.

In the C240 you would be correct, because the manual transmission comes as standard equipment. In the C320, the standard transmission is an automatic.

This is why you see me refer to any manual transmission as manual transmission.

There are some people now who think that when the transmission selector lever is in the floor, it is a stick shift.

Continuing societal decadence.

To PEH,

Sorry! Guess I am just not technically qualified to post in this forum. Sure don't want to cause confusion.

Thanks for setting me straight.

Larry -

Congratulations on the new car!

One comment on the exhange rate. MB probably "hedged" on the exchange rate to lock it in when they priced the car in dollars. That's how most of the multinationals work. They can't go around increasing/decreasing the price with fluctuations in the exchange rate. Its at least a ten-year deal to design and sell a new model.

To Larry B:
When the German marks go from 2.00 per dollar to 2.20 per dollar, the money Mercedes gets for the car is less not more.
I'll explain. If marks are 2 per dollar, Mercedes would get 15,000 marks for your $30,000 when the conversion is made. When the mark is 2.2 per dollar Mercedes would get only 13,636 marks for your $30,000 when the conversion is made.
I'll bet that you won't complain about paying less. If Mercedes went by the higher value of the mark, they would have to raise the price not lower it to break even.
I will agree with you that a manual transmission should be available. But its probably not Mercedes' fault but our wonderful big brother government watching over us.

Ignore last message. I read you amounts wrong. I thought you said $2 per mark instead of 2 marks per dollar. My mistake.

Hi Larry--a ghost from a previous post. 2 things--I agree, most of the US MB products are overpriced. Whatever. If you want one, you have to pay for one--if you don't, you won't. Obvoiusly, you did. Did you plan on hustling down to your MB dealer to give them some more money when the dollar fell against the mark? These are long range decisions made to keep the pricing from jumping around every 60 days or so. But what I really wanted to ask you was this--the same question that we discussed about 45 days ago--are you really going to buy another MB stick? Have you driven that thing? Have you taken note that every car mag in the US, UK, and Germany has universally panned that tranny as awful? I just hope that once you get your car, and while it's still in warranty, you will make every effort to let your service writer and your MB regional rep know how awful it is, and how much better it could be. Again--I'm on your side! I'm a MB geek who just can't believe that they can't make a manual tranny that's worth a flip. BTW, I think overall the new C is pretty neat. I'm #1 at our dealer for a C32. Your foil, allen.

These complaints about the MB manual transmissions blow me completely away. Yes I have driven Six Speed C Class cars. I've driven two different cars, one of them twice. I also have driven an SLK with the same Six Speed manual transmission. No, I have not seen any car magazines which are naysayers about the MB manual transmissions.

I think that these transmissions and clutches are great. I only wish that my manual transmission Corvette shifted as nice. I have had a number of manual transmission Mercedes; a '68 230, three 240D's, an '88 300E with a manual transmission, and I've never had one minute's trouble out of them. They all shifted great, just as the new Six Speed does.

My question to you is, have YOU driven one, or are you happy to make up your mind based on what a magazine writer tells you?

I used to think that what writers say carried weight. I have since developed the opinion that most of them have English degrees, know how to write, and don't know much of anything else, except the perks that they get from the car companies that are pushing their product.

If I ever get a bad MB manual transmission, I will reevaluate, so far MB's manual transmissions are batting a thousand with me. I wish I could say the same for all other aspects of the cars and the car company.

It boils down to this; you are a manual transmission fan or you are not. I have driven well over 1 Million miles in my life, with probably 70 or 80 percent of those miles in manual transmission cars. I learned how to handle them when I first started driving, and have much experience doing so. I have no qualms with those who don't like them or don't know how to drive one(these people are usually one and the same). If someone is complaining about a particular manual transmission, I have my doubts about their skill in driving one.

By the way, I may not end up with this car. It has been held up at the port and not released to the trucking company for delivery. This happened to me when I ordered my E Class in '96 and it turned out that the car had crash damage and was repaired at the port before shipping. I am very afraid that this is what has happened and is what is holding up the car at the port. I will not accept a new car that has already been crashed and repaired. Maybe I'll end up in an SLK after all, and if I do, yes it will be a Six Speed. Buying a sports car without a manual transmission would be like hiring a prostitute that didn't have a you know what.

Thanks for the response.

What gets me is that this "$30k" car runs to $43k for simply adding a 6-cyl, sport springs and different wheels. Ugh.

makakio,

You are misinformed. The C240 has a six cylinder standard. The Sport package adds $3,000. A V6 and sport package with wheels, springs et al totals out at $33,000. You are probably getting previous C Class pricing mixed up with the '01 C Class pricing.

Good luck,
Larry

Larry,

Having worked in the Big Apple's night neighborhoods, I feel strange reading that analogy.

You know, you think that you have heard just about every funny line, but then someone comes up with something like this one and then you realize how little you know about the night life or sports cars...

Good luck with the new car. Maybe we can read a good and thorough evaluation in the future?

Im with Larry on this one..

I have driven several MB manual transmission cars and I feel that they shift better than almost any car out there. I have mostly driven C-classes, W210's, and W124's (all in Europe), and in my opinion, I have never felt another car shift like a MB manual does. I have never read a car magazine article saying anything bad about MB manual trannies. I totaly understand how Larry feels about driving MB manuals. Theres a special feel to the MB stick shift that no other car has in my opinion. I call it the "swoosh & click" shift feel. Its about time MB brought the manual tranny back to the U.S., maybe sometime in the near future, they will have a W210 available in manual--just in time before I finish grad school and earn big bucks to buy one. But for now, my 300E suits me well..

Regards

Not sure if makakio is thinking the same thing I was, but when you here C240 you assume 4-cylinder, right?

This is not the case as the C240 IS a V6, but the displacement is not 2.4, what gives? Isn't it 2.8 or something?

Can anybody explain how the geniuses in Marketing,(Couldn't have be just one persons idea) came up with this nonsense?
