When I got my '89 300se back from a service, the dealer left a little note in the car saying the auxillary fan was not working. Sorry for being stupid, but what does the auxillary fan do? I was a bit concerned yesterday, I went on a 350 mile drive, and when I hit heavy traffic and was stationary for a while, the engine temp hit just under 120c and was almost redline.
Also, before I took my car in for a service I noticed there was a lot of play with the steering wheel before it affected the direction of travel, and it was a bit dodgy at speed (if felt like it was drifting left to right, especially in medium/high winds). The dealer said I need a new steering box. Are these cheap, do i have to go mercedes, or can I go for and OE brand?

Thanks for all you help

Oliver

Aux fans increase air flow through the radiator when A/C is on or if the engine is heating up. Preaty important thing to prevent overheating. Better get those fixed.

I don't understand why these idiots didn't call me to explain something was wrong and give me the opprtunity to get it fixed instead of leaving a note.
My engine was very close to over heating.

Also, the steering box can be resealed and adjusted instead of just replaced. I would allow an independent to do this that has experience on Mercedes.

Oliver, BTW, have your main fan clutch checked. If you are getting this hot, that should be coming on and if you raise the revs a bit, it should help cool things down. Don't let it OVERHEAT->been there done that.

Hello,

saw your complaint and just went through a steering box rebuild in my 89 260E. Had great place in Columbus, OH called STEER AND GEAR (614)231-4064........ gave 1 year warranty and have had no problems. I guess they do all major eurocar boxes. Cost me about $200 if I remember correctly.
Good luck!

Eric
