I thought I read on this list (in the past 6 months) that somebody has a W124 with a steel "belly pan" (the one that is usually fiberglass and bolts underneath the engine / transmission area).
My belly pan was ruined a few months ago and I was interested in replacing it with a steel (aluminum would be cool too!) one. Does anyone know where I might get one, or obtain a pattern that I could take to a fabrication shop in order to have one built?!?!? All replies appreciated. ------------------ Jay Yambrovich 1989 300 E 1992 190-E 2.3 |

Nope, not CREATING an "allroad", just having to use it that way sometimes in my job.
I manage a $75Million loan portfolio for construction of homes, commercial buildings, subdivisions etc. There are plenty of times that I have to drive on unpaved surfaces. The belly pan that WAS on the car came off one evening while on the freeway going 70. Front of it dropped to the road surface and started sliding along. I was able to pull off but didn't have any way to secure it up or remove it to complete the 25 mile drive home. CHP came along and had a large pry bar so I ended up prying the thing off, destroying it in the process. THEREFORE, a metal one would be nice. Anybody got a part number??? I was at the dealer today and they quoted me $92 for a new fiberglass one (there's a short one and a long one available, mine was the long one). He didn't mention a metal one... Thanks again for all your help. ------------------ Jay Yambrovich 1989 300 E 1992 190-E 2.3 |

I have heard, that the ckd (completely Knocked down) cars that were assembled in India, came with thicker steel plates underneath. (and firmer springs) as the roads maybe slightly less maintained in some areas there.
but as to how you would find out what the PN was/are for those, I have no clue. I have a 4matic, (which I like to think is allroad ) and it looks like my belly pan is steel, but having not looked at it closely, I won't claim absolutely that it is. Perhaps someone with the CD can check and see if the 4matic pn's are different than the standard 124's regards Russ [This message has been edited by russla (edited 09-29-2000).] |

Both my 190E and 500SEL have sump guards or belly pans fitted and both are made of 3/8" boiler plate. The 190 is a Middle East Spec. car and as far as I can make out the 500 is Japanese spec. They have both proved extremely useful and have saved my hide a few times over the speed bumps the size of camel's humps we have fitted around town. I recently had to find a new one for the 500 and it cost about $112 from the dealers. Having them fitted means changing the oil topside but this is no grief really. Obviously, all these pans are a different part numbers and your local agent should be able to help out here......

The protective metal sump shield has been available to ALL Mercedes-Benz cars for many years. Depending on the marker, is standard or available as an extra.
It is primarily used in countries with poor road conditions. When ordering a new car, you must request option code number 481. It costs between DM180 to DM450 depending on the car series. You may order the item post factory, although the dealer must provide you with an exact part number, because the architecture of the sump shield varies sharply from model to model (for example for a four-cylinder W124 and six-cylinder W124 the size and opening for draining the oil is completely different). The change is a DIY job, easily handled by regular tools and some patience. In some W123 models, specially diesels, the change is more difficult, since the oil pan is attached to the sump shield, and requires its partial removal. Certain aftermarket companies also offer the sump-shields, but I would steer away from those, since its ability to protect the engine is generally not proven. A. You wrote that you have a 300E, not a 300D. I thought that only the diesel version has the additional long one (to abate engine noise; both diesel and gas have the short one up front. |

Do they have any of these for a W126. The foam has deteriorated along with a few of the bolt holes.

Many answers, are we talking about the same thing?
If you mean a steel skid plate, under the oil pan, they are a wise investment for your car.
Mine is a W126, and the car is lowered, so the car cried out for that protection.; and the part is not expensive, I think it cost $135 as an OEM Mercedes Benz part, (that was what it cost in 1995, according to the Indept. MBZ shop in Orange County, that installed it, per my records on the car) Absolutely worth it, for the W124 too, just be like having worthwhile insurance on the car. Don't think twice. Have one put on right away. Peace of mind on the cheap

Thanks both My fiberglass shield had torn at a few of the screw holes, It finally gave way towards the end of an 8 hour drive last week. There was this odd noise and people would just stare as they passed. Must have been glowing hot where it touched the pavement.
Amazing that its so inexpensive. I inquired last week about the cost of a lens for my turn signal and the dealer quoted me 130! I've purchased a complete turn signal and head light unit for that much (Bosch shipped from Germany.) |
