300e Air Conditioner Blower

I've checked the archives on this one and found a couple of ideas, but none quite fit this problem.

My 300e's air conditioner blower has ceased functioning. The air conditioner itself appears to be running fine - on the highway you can feel the cold air coming through the vents, slow down or stop and nothing comes out. Put on the "defrost" = no fan.

I checked the auxillary fuse; it is fine.

Local independent MB service says it is probably blower itself (though it never squeaked or gave ordinary signs of failure) or blower resistor. Both jobs require an odious labor job getting in and getting out, so they recommend if doing one, do the other.

Blower job is priced at $500, resistor at $500. He'll give us a "deal" for $900 for both.

First question: is there anything simpler I may have overlooked?

Second question: price seem ok on this or not? I know it is the old "how long you gonna keep it?" question.

Thanks - Bob

About five years ago my fan stopped working on my '90 300E. I bought a new motor to put in it. I removed the old motor but was not able to remove the fans from the shafts to swap them to the new motor.

So....I turned the old motor by hand a bit and put a little oil on the shafts.

I put the old motor back in and it has worked perfectly ever since.
