Question Estate split folding seats

I have a 1992 200TE wagon. Does anybody know how to get the back seats to fold flat. I can get the bottom of the seats to tilt forward but the back of the seats are stuck in position and i can't see any lever to release them to flatten down.

please help.

Hi

Open both rear doors and look inside the door shuts just where the door lock engages and you will see a sort of mushroom headed pin on each side of the car. I cannot remember if you push or pull (but it is one of them!) and this should release the respective seat back latch.

thanks, i know the pin you are refering to. I will trying fiddeling with it so. It does push in a bit but it didn't drop the seatback. Perhaps i need to apply a bit more pressure.

Good - but I do not want to be the harbinger of bad news prematurely but the latch mechanisms have been known to stick/fail - try a search on this forum.

It might be useful to have an angry teenager lay in the back and apply pressure (kick) the back as you fiddle pushing and pulling the release pin.

Good luck

Once you get it open, lube it, at least twice per year!

Got it open. All it took was a swift kick from the boot. The little pins in the door frame seemed to be a red herring. I have applied WD40 to the hinges. Thanks for the help folks.

I had the same situation on my 94 e320 and did the same to release them. However, I used a spray grease rather than wd40 that iis really a rust disolver rather than a real lubricant.

When the door is closed it pushes the pin into the lock mechanism. The real potential problem is the cable in the wheel well that connects to the foot paw that is held down when the seat cushion (for your butt, not your back) is in the seating position.

The more often you release the seat back, the easier it releases.

Bob

P.S. Although my Golden Retriever has lots of space with the seat backs up, he prefers when I fold one down so he can get closer to the front passengers.
