'96 sl320 headlamp wiper pump problem

I searched for a threaad on this subject but was unable to locate one on this subject. My headlamp wipers are not repositioning them selves to the idle location so the fluid pump is continuing to run. the only way I could stop it was to unplug the power to the pump. Any ideas why this is happening and how I can get the wipers to properly relocate. many thanks
