Non MBenz (91 Accord) Extreme force needed to get car out of park

I'm sorry this isn't a MBenz question but a Honda question

* If anyone could direct me to a good Honda tech site I'll gladly look there *

My sister has a 1991 Honda Accord (auto) and on the gear selector column, it requires great force to move the car out of park into another gear. From Reverse all the way down to D2, there is no problem what so ever. Also putting the gear into park requires a major workout also.

I've had two mechanics look at and were baffled by it.

Its on old car with about 130,000 miles and runs well in all other regards.

Thanks with any leads,
Reny

Just a thought, I have a '99 chrysler 300M that did that and it turned out to be a rusty-stuck cable that connected the shifter lever to the transmission lever. hosed it down with WD-40 and motor oil and it free'd up.

Al Parker is right..

I had a 1987 Pontiac Firefly (aka Chevy Sprint) that I had the opposite problem with - key couldn't be removed once the car was in park.

There is a cable between the ignition switch and shift lever. This cable is pulled when the shift lever is moved out of the "Park" position. When this happens, the ignition switch restricts key removal so you can't take the key out while the car is in Drive.

This cable is either stuck (as happened to Al Parker below) or is misadjusted (as happened to me). On my car, you loosened a screw and adjusted the cable -- just like adjusting a parking brake cable.

Find this cable and unstick it and/or adjust it. If you keep shifting in and out of park like this, you'll damage something.
