W124 metal VDO box ticking under psngr Dash?????

I got to the car after work today and I heard the ticking, didn't pay attention as it was raining and started and went on my way.... Got home, turned car off, sat in the car for a couple minutes reading some stuff, then the ticking started out of no where ... I started car, ticking went away.... turned car off, no ticking.....until about a minute later... its still ticking....

Moved the rug and there is a metal panel on the floor board / fire wall with one screw to the floor, I am going to go out and see what's down there.. Could it be a relay?

Any ideas? I am afraid my car is going to not start in the am if it ticks all night long

edit: I took that panel off and what is ticking is a metal box goldish in color on the passenger side area mentioned above, it is stamped VDO . Its got torx screws on the four corners. Of course my tools are in the whse...

Still ticking..... any clue guys? I need to order something tommorrow from Fastlane if I need to.

Well it started this am.

I had some trouble starting, but it did start. I don't know if I panicked and cranked it too short of a time or too long, or what, but it was still making noise this am and started .

Any ideas, before it gets worse?

Check to see if the OVP is full of water. I've seen this happen when the component compartment cover(behind the battery)isn't properly installed. It can let rain water run down the windshield and into the compartment area. Good luck

Hi Yosshimura:

I have a 87 260E with the same problem. Does it sound like a soft blinker ticking noise? If it is, that is the sound I have. It goes on for about 10-15 seconds and then just stops. It happens when you open the door or turn the ignition key on or off. No one had any answers for me so I just live with it.

I have been driving the car with this condition for over a year now and it hasn't blown up or have any type of ignition. The car runs fine. I would be curious to find out what the problem or non-problem is. I just convinced myself that it has to do with the alarm resetting itself.

I hope this can put your mind at ease knowing that I am driving around with the same symptom and no problems.

Aloha,
Eric

Thanks for the responses

The part # on the unit is 124 545 5532 T/LLR. I called a local shop and they claim that is sealed and have to change the whole thing, $1k new... I checked in Fastlane and that piece is on there for about $1K (looks like an innocent little box, not expensive looking, lol).

Funny (? hmm, not funny :p ) thing is that when I left for lunch it was buzzing (since this am when I got to the office), then during lunch I made a few stops and the sucker did not buzz one time!!

My buzz is different than your buzz (and diff than those I read in the arvhices )... as it happens about one minute after you turn the car off... you put key back in, turn it on and no noise, even if you immediiately turn it off it won't go back on for another minute... that is before lunch..

Maybe it is the ovp and wet, b/c it rained LIKE CRAZY from about 1:30pm yesterday till 4 ish... and maybe now it dried>??? I better check behind the battery where the OVP is..

p.s. someone (the local indi ) that the 95 didn't have an ovp.. I wanted to change it when the fuel relay was changed. I havent looked into it on here

Out of interest, I looked up your part number 124 545 5532.

Turns out it's the cruise control amplifier... not something I would expect to tick when the ignition was turned off????

Yeah that is what's weird about it...cruise control? But definitly that is where the noise was coming from. I felt the metal beating as it was ticking... hasn't happen again ...

Still wonder if the rain had anything to do with it,and what to do to prevent it from further happening again.
