air filter question

I had a K+N in my slk, I had to replace the air flow meter. Should I replace the filter also, to the factory kind? Did the K+N cause my problem with the air flow due to oil in the filter?

YES and YES

I believe that any cotton filter of quality can be made to work without fouling the maf... BUT, I also believe that the filter has to be almost dry to achieve this... and then, they do not filter dust very well...

I'd stay stock... many dealers will refuse warranty paying for it if you have an oiled filter... I also have an Audi, and Audi owners have had the same experience.

Get a better flowing intake system... where I don't know, but a larger, better designed airbox with a larger filter would be the right way to go.. probably no space but...

As others and you have seen, K&N filters and MAF do not go well together.
Get back to an OE filter

Thanks guys, I will buy a new filter. I hope I don't loose too many horses in the process.

Probably none. K&N's claims are overblown, and unless you've taken steps to increase air-flow through the system elsewhere, you're probably not gaining anything other than intake noise.

Don't worry Snglbrd.
You will not loose a single horse by swithcing to the proper air filter as you have not gained a single quarter horse when you switched to that lesser filter.
All you gained was a bit of intake noise, and you lost quite a bit of money in the process.
