Had a key cut for my 300E a few years ago--locksmith can do it. Cost $35.

iozero 10-13-2000 09:15 PM

I went to the dealer with the VIN number and they sent me a new key for $13. I tried locksmiths but didn't have any luck.

Dan, I had mine done at my local MB dealer's parts dept. They asked to see the VIN and proof of ownership; they cost $26 each and they took about 3 or 4 days. Try Partshop first, though.

The laser cut keys are a nickel steel rather than the brass that most locksmiths would use. Less wear of the key, and presumably less brass coming off and plating the internals of the lock mechanism.

Benzman500 10-14-2000 06:32 AM

were they lazer cut even in 85. and will i have trouble since it is a euro.

I have an '83 300D-T

I found two sources. Hardware stores (real ones) have a Mercedes BLANK. If you want the rubberized type, get a blank from the MB dealer. In either case, unless it is the complex "3-d" type, a simple key copy machine will do the trick. NB: have them buff it well before using it.

good luck

Dan,
A friend of mine has an 85 500SEL euro, and if I remember correctly, it is a "regular" key, and with some luck a local key shop can duplicate it, or, like it was suggested earlier, buy the blank and have someone else cut it for you.

I'd like to echo Robert Roe's comments. I've gone both routes. Dealer and locksmith. Both were the smae price. And as Robert points out the nickle based blanks don't leave your lock cylinders (driver's door and ignition) full of brass wearing off. Intersetingly enough I've had to replace both afore mentioned cylinders within 6-12 motnhs of each other. When I took them apart, it wasn't a pretty sight. Can't say for a fact there was a dirrect correlation, but I don't go "cheap brass" on the blanks anymore.

Best of luck.

Bill, you might try to pull out the broken key fragment if you have very fine pointed tweezers. If you're very lucky, you might be able to pull it out. Locksmiths probably have better tools to get broken keys out.

You can still lock the car, climb in the passenger's side and lock the driver's side door and then lock the passenger side door, assuming the passenger side lock works flawlessly.

I had to replace the door handle on a '83 SD, and I ordered it from the dealer for about $120 with one key. With the VIN, the keys will match properly. There is something called a "shop key" that has its own key, but then you have a two-key car. Perhaps a locksmith can get the key part out, or make you a new tumbler and put it in for less than a new handle.

I went the new handle route because the door lock tumbler was frozen up. I took the door panel off so I could get the thing put back together easier, but I didn't try it without removing the door panel first.

Good luck,

Dan, why don't you call several local MB dealers' parts departments and ask them how much they will charge. Then you can be assured of getting the high quality, original equipment key blank, as well as finding the least expensive place.

As an addendum...
regarding the "high quality" MB brass. Last winter I dropped my MB fob key in the snow and didn't find it till spring. I was a bit disturbed to find it rusting along the key cuttings. Hmmmmmmmm. 0000 steel wool and a brushing rendered it clean, but rust??????

LarryBible 10-15-2000 08:18 PM

MB now warns about brass keys. The brass particles deposit themselves in the tumblers and cause problems.

Lock cylinder problems with the ignition switch and steering column lock in an MB, is a problem that you want to take all precautions to prevent. If one of these locks fails, it can cause you to have to remove the steering column to drill out on many models. It's typically about 6 or 7 hours work.

Don't take a chance on a brass key. It's not worth the risk.

Good luck,

Deezl, it doesn't surprise me that your key was rusting. It is, after all, steel, nickel plated perhaps, but steel. I once looked at a 126 SD where the P.O. had a spare key (without the rubber part) hidden under the license plate. Talk about rust!
