I wrote a while back (02-18) about my AC problem with a 400E. I checked all the fuses but did not see a fuse in the Green Relay under the fuse box (What does it look like?) We jumped the 2 wires on the line beside the sight glass and the compressor did not engage. What else could I try?
Thanks,
Alan

You have one of two things that are wrong. One you can do. Take the cover off of the fuse box. Then take off the 6 phillips screws that hold the outer cover on. Take off the cover and look to the rear. You will see 2 relays with fuses in the top. Replace the 15a relay with a 20a. If this does not fix it, you will need a tech. The resistor could have burned up near the drier bottle. This resistor helps the fan to run on low speed, but produces heat. The heat will, over time, burn the wire and the resistor up. A tech will have to run a new wire and replace the resistor.
Good luck.

Question. I'm very new to this board, so you'll have to excuse me if I say something wrong...
I'm do just about everything myself from boat work to auto... So here-in is my question. It started because I am looking at a model similar to what is mentioned in this post. Why do you h-a-v-e to have a tech do the second job you are talking about? Isn't it something that could be done by a electonically savy person? I mean if we are talking about a resistor swap (just need the spec for the resistor (make sure the fellow puts it on in the right direction)) and the correct guage wire...

I'm just curious about this that is all. I'm actively looking for a safe car for my wife, and the 92 400SE is looking pretty good to me. I can do 90% of the things myself. Short of computer diag. work (since I don't have the comp. module for that car.)

Anyhow, I just want to know if I've missed something, and more importantly I do not mean to disrespect anyone!

Thanks,

Pete

PETE,
Just a fair warning, stay away from all S class vehicles built in 92-93. They are more troublesome than the norm, sort of a German Yugo! If you do a search of these models you will see a list from AC evaporators, window regulators, dashes flashing, door closing assist pumps, Bose amplifiers and the shimmy problem. These are the tip of the iceberg as other things also crop up. The car was rushed to market and was a loser. Looks good but trouble. There was a site called mercedesproblems you may try to find.

FWIW, a resistor does not care about polarity. So all that is really needed is the resistor value. Once that is known IF it is not a wire with the built-in resistor that is. Then one can upgrade to a higher wattage resistor to eliminate any future problems. We've done that to our 5.5 Mwatt generators on our governor controls, used for the reason dropping voltage for an actuator.
Although reading the last post I'd go looking for another car if time is not an issue! best regards. Leon H
