Water Pump, Vibration Dampener Removal

I could use some information on the vibration dampener removal. I am replacing the water pump on my 87 560 SL. To gain access to the bottom bolt, I understand that I must remove the dampener and drive pulleys.

My first concern is the torque of the nut, it is listed at 400nm, and will I be able to get this thing loose with an impact gun? The impact gun specs at 700nm in reverse and 650 in forward. The second concern is the woodruff key on the crank. I have marked the position of the balancer to the block and also the pulleys position. When the balancer is removed, is there risk of the crank being in position where the woodruff key is on the bottom and could it fall inside the timing case cover? I am hoping that the key position on the crankshaft is external of the engine covers. My manual is not specific on the location. Please, could use the advice, I would like to try to cover my bases.

Thanks,

BDBENZ

If your referring to the torque of the 27mm bolt on the crankshaft I believe you do not have to remove that bolt. I just replaced the waterpump on my '87 420SEL and needed only to remove the pulley and the balancer to get at the pump bolts. There are lots of posts on here about the need to NOT remove that 27mm bolt when removing the water pump.

If you find that the bolt needs to be removed, just see if it turns the proper way where a breaker bar can be jammed against the ground and bump the starter. That's what I did for my brother's 190D.
Thanks

The 27mm center bolt does not have to be removed. There are 6 13mm bolts holding the pulley and damper to the hub on the crankshaft. Be sure to mark the pulley and damper to aid in reassembly ( they only fit together one way, one bolt hole is offset from the rest.). Once the pulley is off the water pump r&r is easy. Just be careful to not overtighten the water pump bolts because they are going into the aluminum block.

Thank You!!!!You made my day

I obviously was trying to remove the hub assembly, pulleys and dampener without realizing the dampener could be separated from the hub. I was very concerned with trying to get the 27mm nut loose. That sure is a relief. I will be able to wrap this up tomorrow, and get the car on the road again. I appreciate the expert advice. This forum proves once again on the quality of members and has never let me down!!

Thanks,

Bill
