Hi. On a previous topic I mentioned I was having the front brakes of my 88 300E make a whistle sound and then the ABS would kick in at very low speeds (5 MPH when comming to a stop).
I took the car to the dealer and they found the ABS sensors to be faulty and need replacement. The estimate is $850 parts and labor. The guy said since the car doesn't do it all the time (usually rush hour) it's not a safety issue and I don't have to replace them.
What do you all think?
Thanks for the replies.

Speed sensor problems are common and do cause the braking effect you describe under 5mph. If the sensors give faulty readings above that speed they will be disreguarded and the system shut down with the light turned on.

I would suggest that you find some one to replace the sensors for you. The current MB list price is $154 each. I wouldn't expect a quality shop to install parts that you bought elsewhere, but installation isn't that difficult. I have no idea how those sensors could cost over $800.
